Panther Hollow Dental Lodge stresses the importance of continuing dental care. A prophy, or dental cleaning, with your dental hygienist is recommended every 6 months by the American Dental Association.

During a prophy, your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar deposits from your teeth. Plaque is soft bacteria on your teeth, while tartar is hardened bacteria that has been present on your teeth longer.

It is necessary to have a periodic exam with your dentist and bitewing x-rays once per year. A Panoral or Full Mouth series of x-rays is recommended every 3 to 5 years. X-rays are the only method that allows a dentist to examine between the teeth to detect decay.

Dental x-rays can detect early signs of decay, abnormalities, bone loss associated with gum disease, tumors, and infections. It is best to identify and treat these issues as soon as possible, before they become a problem.

Our hygienists may also recommend a fluoride varnish. Fluoride varnish is a temporary adhesive form of fluoride applied to the tooth surface by our hygienists. It is designed to adhere to the tooth surface and keep fluoride in contact with the tooth for several hours. Fluoride varnish is used to help prevent decay, remineralize the tooth surface, and treat sensitive teeth.

Home dental care is also very important. We encourage our patients to brush their teeth twice a day, and floss at least once per day. Those that regularly brush and floss are proven to live healthier, longer lives.
